Commuters using the Koforidua-Suhum main road are set to experience some relief as rehabilitation works have commenced on the most deteriorated sections of the highway.

The project, spearheaded by the New Juaben Municipal Assembly, seeks to address the persistent challenges posed by deep potholes that have made travel along the stretch both difficult and costly for motorists.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Samuel Adongo, who inspected the ongoing works, said improving road infrastructure remains a top priority for the Assembly.

“We are committed to prioritising road infrastructure to enhance the daily experience of commuters,” he said in an interview with Accra FM/CTV News reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel.

He further stressed that accessible and well-maintained roads are essential to local development.

Mr. Adongo also outlined broader development plans for the municipality, including upgrades in education, healthcare, sanitation, and the construction of modern market centres and lorry stations to boost revenue mobilisation.

The current rehabilitation exercise is being carried out with District Road Improvement Programme(DRIP) machines as a temporary measure to provide immediate relief for road users.

However, the MCE noted that a full-scale reconstruction of the Koforidua-Suhum road is still pending.

The contract for the project, awarded during the administration of the first term of  President John Dramani Mahama, has yet to see full execution by the contractor, leaving the road in poor condition for years.

Drivers plying the stretch have welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely.

Many recounted frequent damage to their vehicles due to the potholes, which often forced them to spend heavily on repairs. While praising the MCE for the swift response, they appealed to authorities to ensure the ongoing works are completed to standard and urged the commencement of the full reconstruction project without further delay.
