Deputy Minister for Defence, Brogya Genfi, has aimed at the Member of Parliament for Suame, Lawyer John Darko, accusing him of engaging in “naked partisanship” over his recent comments about worsening traffic congestion in the constituency.

Mr. Genfi, a former parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticised the MP’s remarks as politically opportunistic, arguing that the traffic issues are primarily due to delays in the completion of the  Suame Interchange Project, which he said suffered neglect during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

“He was elected as the NPP Parliamentary Candidate in January 2024, at a time when the Suame traffic situation had already deteriorated due to the stalled interchange project,” Genfi stated in a press release.

“Yet, not once did he call on his government to pay contractors to return to the site.”

The Suame Interchange Project, launched in 2022 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, was intended to ease congestion in Kumasi and surrounding areas such as Kronum, Tafo, Magazine, and Abrepo.

However, work on the project was suspended for several months amid financial constraints and non-payment of contractors.

Mr. Genfi noted that since the John Mahama-led NDC government assumed office in January 2025, the project has resumed and is currently progressing steadily.

He therefore dismissed recent complaints by the Suame MP as disingenuous.

“President Mahama has been in office for just six months, yet we are already seeing tangible progress,” he said. “To now act as though this government is responsible for the current congestion is not only misleading, it is dishonest.”

The Deputy Defence Minister’s comments come on the back of public backlash against the Suame MP, who was recently quoted lamenting increased traffic in the area.

Critics, including some constituents, argue that his concerns are politically motivated and fail to acknowledge the NPP’s role in delaying the project.
