Election Watch calls on Nat’l Election Security Taskforce to take interest in NPP primaries
Think tank Election Watch Ghana has urged the Election Security Taskforce of the Ghana Police Service to closely monitor the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.
The group stressed that the period leading up to the primaries, as well as the election itself, should not be treated as a purely internal party matter but as a national exercise that demanded sustained peace, security, and stability.
In a statement released on Monday, November 24, 2025, Election Watch Ghana expressed concern over the tone of the campaigns being ran by the flagbearer hopefuls, noting a rise in ethnocentric messaging and personal attacks.
“Comments by some aspirants linking leadership qualities to ethnic backgrounds risk deepening divisions and contradict the party’s message of unity,” the statement said.
It further observed that campaign efforts appeared increasingly focused on mobilising supporters through divisive narratives, rather than engaging in meaningful discussions on governance, economic policy, or innovation.
According to the group, such developments could make the January primaries “one of the most tense and security-challenged elections in the NPP’s history”.
Election Watch Ghana, therefore, called on all five aspirants, their supporters, and the party leadership to avoid rhetoric that could inflame tensions or weaken national cohesion.
“Political competition should strengthen Ghana’s democratic values, not diminish them,” the statement emphasised.
