GA/R: NPP PC pledges support for Okada riders

Ms Gloria Owusu, the aspiring Member of Parliament for the Trobu Constituency in the Greater Accra region on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has embarked on a foot tour of Pokuase and its environs in the Ga North municipality
Accompanied by some Trobu Constituency executives of the party, she visited Okada riders, traders, and women to extend her greetings and solicit their support ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections.
During her tour in Pokuase, she emphasised two key points – the need for a regulatory system and the importance of renewing the licenses of Okada riders.
She expressed her commitment to these issues, stating that as a woman, she deeply cares for her constituents and is determined to make meaningful changes.
She promised that if elected as the Member of Parliament for Trobu, she has several plans that will transform the lives of the people in her Constituency.
Ms Owusu also addressed the propaganda statements made by the National Democratic Congress against the NPP government that is has failed to live up to the promises it made to the people, asserting that these claims are untrue.
She highlighted the achievements of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the past seven years, stating that all promises made have been fulfilled.
She assured the people of Trobu that she, known affectionately as Obaa Noaa, will ensure they benefit from the continued development of Ghana under the NPP government.
In a remark, Mr. Moses Abor, the former Greater Accra Youth Organiser and Chairman of the Identifiable Group of the NPP, clarified that the NPP's stance is not to legalise Okada operations but to regulate them.
He recalled that during the Mahama administration, Okada riders were prohibited from operating in 2013, but the NPP has since decided to regulate their activities.
Mr Abor noted that Okada riding should not be a lifelong career and highlighted the NPP’s initiatives to provide better alternatives.
He said under the leadership of Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, many Okada riders received extensive training in 2018.
He mentioned that the president of the Okada Riders Association, who was once an Okada rider, now owns a car.
Many former Okada riders have joined the Ghana Police Service, Immigration Service, and Fire Service, and are thriving in these roles, he added.
Additionally, he said over 300 Uber cars were introduced and distributed to Okada members, allowing them to earn a better income.
This initiative, he indicated, is part of the NPP's broader efforts to provide sustainable employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of Ghanaians.
