The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Mr Abraham Koomson, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo receives her full pension benefits despite her recent removal from office.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, September 20, 2025, Mr. Koomson acknowledged that Justice Torkornoo’s misjudgments led to her dismissal but argued that she should not be left without the retirement benefits due her many years of service to the nation.

“I am not against her removal; she brought this upon herself by not exercising her power wisely.

But on humanitarian grounds, I plead with President Mahama to ensure she is given her pension entitlements so that she does not suffer at home,” Mr Koomson stated.

Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, by President Mahama following the establishment of a prima facie case against her after three separate petitions were filed.

Acting on the advice of the Council of State, a five-member inquiry committee was set up under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution to investigate the allegations.

The committee’s report found her culpable, citing, among other issues, the unlawful use of public funds, including covering travel expenses for her husband and daughter.

Based on these findings, she was officially removed from office on September 1, 2025.

While affirming the legitimacy of her removal, the GFL leader stressed that the state still has a duty to honour her long years of judicial service by ensuring she receives her pension benefits.
