Ghana has no extradition treaty with the USA-Al-Wahab to OSP
Farouk Al-Wahab, an international relations expert, has described the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) statements regarding the possible extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as “much ado about nothing.”
Speaking on Accra FM’s evening news on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, Mr. Al-Wahab argued that Ghana has no legal framework that allows for the extradition of its citizens from the United States.
According to him, while the U.S. has an extradition arrangement that applies to Ghana, there is no reciprocal law enabling Ghana to request the return of Ghanaian fugitives residing in the U.S.
He therefore challenged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to clarify the matter publicly, insisting that no such agreement exists.
Mr. Al-Wahab cited the case of Sedina Tamakloe, a former government official, as an example, noting that if an effective extradition treaty existed, the New Patriotic Party government would have invoked it in that instance.
“You think the U.S. will readily extradite a Ghanaian citizen who even holds a green card? Certainly not,” he remarked, dismissing the OSP’s assertions about extraditing Mr. Ofori-Atta as unrealistic and legally unfounded.
