Delegation in Jamaica

A Ghanaian delegation has commended the courage and dedication of the Ghana Armed Forces Engineering Contingent deployed to Jamaica to support recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

During a visit to Luana, members of the delegation led by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa and Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, interacted with the troops, who have been working on the ground to help affected communities rebuild their lives.

The visit highlighted the commitment and resilience of the Ghanaian engineers, who left their families behind to provide humanitarian and technical assistance to the Caribbean nation.

The delegation noted that the Ghanaian troops remain in high spirits and are motivated by the warm reception they have received from the Jamaican people.

Jamaica, they said, has expressed deep appreciation to Ghana for its swift response to the call for assistance from Prime Minister Dr. the Most Honourable Andrew Holness.

The mission is being led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.

President Mahama’s prompt approval of the deployment has been widely praised as a demonstration of Ghana’s commitment to international solidarity and humanitarian support.

The delegation includes the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, and Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Caribbean, Mr. Kofi Kyei Darkwa (KKD).

Officials say the intervention is not only helping Jamaica recover from the effects of the hurricane but is also strengthening bilateral relations, opening a new chapter of friendship, defence cooperation and shared resilience between Ghana and Jamaica.
