The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has received the Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at his office in Accra, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen migration governance and border security.

The delegation, led by the Council Chairman, Rev. Steve Wengam, commended the Minister for what it described as exemplary leadership, hailing him as one of the best Interior Ministers Ghana has had.

The Council attributed this to the Ministry’s firm commitment to transparent recruitment processes, improved logistics, and enhanced migration governance.

Rev. Wengam highlighted the government’s practical support to the Ghana Immigration Service, citing the provision of 20 pickup vehicles as a clear demonstration of the administration’s resolve to adequately equip and strengthen the Service to deliver on its mandate.

He further announced plans by the Council to roll out a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative dubbed “Secure Our Borders (SECOBOD)”, aimed at supporting GIS operations and addressing critical challenges, particularly in border security management.

In response, Mr. Muntaka commended the Council for its diligence and assured members of his unwavering support.

He urged officers of the Ghana Immigration Service to remain professional, patriotic, and firmly committed to protecting Ghana’s national interest.

The Interior Minister reaffirmed his support for President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to reset, retool, and reform the Ghana Immigration Service, noting that the Council’s plans align with government priorities.

He also disclosed that plans are underway for the construction of seven new regional offices as part of the President’s broader retooling agenda for the security services.

Mr. Muntaka underscored the critical role of immigration officers as the first point of contact at Ghana’s borders, stressing the need for heightened vigilance and professionalism.

He revealed that while Ghana has 48 approved entry routes, there are over 200 unapproved routes across the country, reinforcing the government’s strong commitment to establishing a robust and comprehensive border monitoring system nationwide.

The meeting, he said, forms part of broader efforts to modernise the Ghana Immigration Service and strengthen national security through improved infrastructure, logistics, and governance reforms.
