The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that security agencies have arrested 53 Nigerian nationals following intelligence-led operations targeting suspected cybercrime centres in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

According to the minister, intelligence gathered over the past 48 hours by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) revealed the existence of several cybercrime hubs operating within East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba. The intelligence suggested that young men were being exploited and coerced by alleged kingpins to engage in various cybercrime activities at these locations.

Acting on the CSA-led intelligence, a joint task force made up of operatives from National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and the Police SWAT Unit carried out coordinated raids on January 16 and 17, 2026.

During the operations, 9 Nigerian nationals were arrested as suspects, while 44 others, also Nigerian nationals, believed to be victims of exploitation, were rescued. The victims were found in apartments using laptop computers believed to be connected to cybercrime activities.

Searches conducted at the various locations led to the retrieval of 52 assorted mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns.

In total, 53 Nigerian nationals were arrested, distributed across the locations as follows: East Legon Hills (5), Afienya (11), Kwabenya (10), Weija (10), and Tuba (17).

Mr George stated that all arrested persons have been properly profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigations.

The minister cautioned foreign nationals seeking opportunities in Ghana to carefully verify claims made by individuals who may lure them into the country under false pretences. He noted that some individuals arrested in previous operations have already been profiled by the Ghana Immigration Service and INTERPOL and handed over to Nigerian law enforcement authorities at the Seme border, while others are currently facing prosecution in Ghanaian courts.

He stressed that safeguarding Ghana’s international cyber reputation remains a top priority, describing the fight against cybercrime as “non-negotiable.”

Mr George also commended the Cyber Security Authority and partner law enforcement agencies for their efforts, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s digital space.
