The governing New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) has said he is not bothered by claims he did not attend Prempeh College.

The public senior high school for boys is located in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region.

It was founded in 1949 by the Asanteman traditional authority, the British Colonial Government, the Methodist Church Ghana and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. It is named after Asanteman monarch Sir Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II, who donated the land on which the school was built. Prempeh College was modelled on Eton College, England.

It has produced some prominent Ghanaians such as former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

When President Nana Akufo-Addo visited the school not too long ago, he paid tribute to its great sons including Chairman Wontumi.

Asked by Paul Adom-Otchere on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programme to set the records straight about whether or not he is an old student of Prempeh College, Chairman Wontumi said: “Paul, you know, sometimes, silence speaks; silence is not nothing, silence has a volume. So, if somebody thinks that you are an illiterate or you didn’t go to school, you don’t have to respond. At the end of the day, it’s about your pocket and how you’re living”.

“But”, he noted, “To me, I know myself and the people who attended the school with me at the college, they know, so …”

During his days at Prempeh College, Chairman Wontumi, who said: “I finished the college in 1996”, told Adom-Otchere that his mates called him ‘Benghazi’.

He said he was in Aggrey House “and I did economics, I did geography and I added mathematics – AdMaths”.
