Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has clarified his recent comments about Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, stating that his remarks were misunderstood and that he never intended any disrespect.

During his official inauguration as the NPP’s running mate in Kumasi on July 9, Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, made a statement comparing the performance of President Akufo-Addo to previous leaders, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

He remarked that no President in Ghana’s history has performed better than President Akufo-Addo, including “their Kwame Nkrumah.” This statement sparked controversy and led to widespread criticism.

In response to the backlash, Dr. Prempeh issued an official apology, acknowledging that his words may have been misinterpreted.

During his campaign tour, he addressed the issue directly and offered an unqualified apology to the chiefs and the public.

Dr Prempeh issued this apology when he visited Nkroful, the birth palce of Dr Kwame Nkrumah as part of his campaign of the Western Region.

Dr. Prempeh emphasized that, as someone who deeply values education and respect, he could never undermine the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah.

He acknowledged Nkrumah’s significant achievements, including his recognition as the Millennium President of Africa, and affirmed that his contributions to Ghana’s development are indisputable.

In his apology, Dr. Prempeh reiterated his respect for Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and assured the public that his comments were not meant to diminish the former President’s legacy.

He expressed his commitment to upholding the values of respect and unity as he continues his campaign
