Internet challenges: Parliament summons Ursula Owusu today

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful, is set to address Parliament today, Monday, March 18, 2024, regarding the government’s response to the ongoing internet disruptions in the country.
The prolonged interruption in internet connectivity, spanning over five days, has elicited widespread frustration among Ghanaians.
Despite the National Communications Authority's announcement of a five-week timeframe for returning to normalcy, Members of Parliament are adamant that the Minister provides clarity on the measures being implemented to restore connectivity.
Mr Samuel Okudzeto, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, in the Volta Region underscored the importance of the Minister's briefing, particularly in light of the continual updates from telecommunication service providers.
He emphasized the necessity of understanding the progress made in addressing the issue, especially considering the potential national security implications stemming from multiple disruptions to submarine fibre optic cables in the high seas.
"The Ghana Telecommunication Chamber and the telcos have all issued statements urging their subscribers to be patient.
They cite multiple disruptions to submarine fibre optic cables in the high seas, and we are unaware of the extent of these disruptions.
This is a national security concern."
"I urge the Communications Minister to inform us of the government's efforts to restore normalcy, enabling access to the internet and our data services."
