Independent Member of Parliament (MP) Kwame Asare Obeng, alias A-Plus, has explained why he decided to caucus with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) instead of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While he cast the NPP as unserious and prideful, he noted the NDC will aid him in serving his Gomoa Central constituency better.

The newcomer MP spoke to Havilah Kekeli, Parliamentary Correspondent for Class FM.

“I think that NDC will help me to achieve why I’m here, and most of my campaign promises to the people of Gomoa Central. Everything in my DNA is about making sure Gomoa Central gets their fair share of the national cake, and NDC has promised to ensure that all the things we have been denied for so many years will be given to us,” A-Plus said.

“Secondly,” he added, “I think the NPP led by the current national executives including Justin Koduah are not serious people, they don’t know what they are about, they are so arrogant.

“At this point, looking at how low they have descended, they should be running after people not people running after them. They are not ready to recover from the abysmal performance in the last election. They are not people I’d have to do business with.”

The entertainer and entrepreneur did not specify what exactly made him confident the NDC would best serve his interests in parliament.

“Apart from any particular thing, I go where I am needed,” he said, rather. “Where my services are needed; where my influence is appreciated; where they are humble about their ambitions; and they know exactly what they are looking for; where they have a long-term plan. Not people who are content with what they just got and so they think they are satisfied. And NDC, irrespective of the numbers they have, sat me down to make me feel so important – and I have to give back. They have made me feel like they need me to be part of them and I need to appreciate that.

“They have also promised that though I came here as an independent candidate, they are not going to leave us out. Every development that is going out there they will ensure [we are part]. They are not deliberately going to try to do stuff that will make me unpopular in the constituency.”

On how he is currently taking in the parliamentary experience, he said, “For now, I am observing.”
