Leadership gap filled: Mahdi Gibrill steps in as NDC acting elections chief

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appointed Mahdi Gibrill as Acting Director of Elections and Information Technology (IT), filling a key leadership gap left by the tragic death of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, a senior party strategist who died in a helicopter crash in August 2025.

In a letter dated 29th January 2026, signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party formally confirmed Mr. Gibrill’s appointment, stating he will oversee elections management, electoral strategy, data systems, and IT operations for the party. The appointment takes effect immediately and is acting in nature until otherwise directed.

The decision follows a Functional Executive Committee (FEC) meeting held on 13th January 2026, at which party leaders reached consensus on the need to strengthen the party’s electoral machinery ahead of upcoming internal elections.

Mr. Gibrill will work closely with the General Secretary, the Functional Executive Committee, the National Executive Committee, and all relevant directorates to ensure efficient discharge of his duties in accordance with the NDC’s constitution and policies. Copies of the letter were circulated to all regional chairmen, regional secretaries, and regional directors of Elections and IT to ensure coordinated implementation across the party’s structures.

The appointment comes months after the untimely death of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah on 6th August 2025, who served as Defence Minister and, before his ministerial role, as Director of Elections and IT for the NDC. Dr. Omane Boamah was among eight people killed in a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region — a tragedy that shocked the nation and senior party members.

Dr. Omane Boamah was widely regarded as a skilled strategist and technocrat whose work in election planning and party organisation helped shape NDC operations. In the days and months after his passing, the party and national leaders held vigils, memorials, and state funeral rites in his honour, reflecting on his contributions to both national governance and party development.

The NDC says Mr. Gibrill’s appointment is part of broader efforts to stabilise key structures and sustain momentum in organisational readiness, particularly as the party advances its internal electoral calendar.
