Madina MP elected chairman of ECOWAS Caucus at Africa Parliamentary Union
Member of Parliament for Madina and prominent human rights lawyer, Mr. Francis-Xavier Sosu, has been unanimously elected Chairman of the ECOWAS Caucus of the Africa Parliamentary Union (APU).
The election took place on Thursday, November 20, 2025, during a caucus meeting held alongside the 84th Session of the APU Executive Committee and ahead of the 47th Conference of African Parliamentarians in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mr Sosu succeeds Mali’s Alioune Gueye, who chaired the caucus for the past two years.
Having served as Vice Chairman earlier this year, Sosu now steps into the top leadership role, a move seen as further evidence of Ghana’s growing influence within regional parliamentary circles.
Ghana’s delegation to the meetings was led by Second Deputy Speaker and MP for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako.
Other members included Mr. Bede Ziedeng (Lawra-Nandom), Mr. Sammy Awuku (Akuapem North), Mr. John Oti Bless (Nkwanta North), and Miss. Shirley Kyei (Atwima Nwabiagya South).
Before the election, Mr Sosu addressed the APU Executive Committee, calling for stronger continental collaboration on youth unemployment, green economic transition, and the harmonisation of national laws to support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He also reiterated his long-standing advocacy for the abolition of the death penalty, the criminalisation of witchcraft accusations—particularly to protect vulnerable older women—and the full operationalisation of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Mr Sosu pledged to pursue significant reforms within the ECOWAS Caucus over the next two years and expressed gratitude to fellow delegates for the confidence placed in his leadership.
