The Majority Caucus in Parliament has accused the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of misusing more than GH¢600 million that was allocated to support and increase cocoa production in the country.

According to the Majority, the funds were intended to finance key interventions aimed at improving productivity in the cocoa sector, including the distribution of fertilizers, seedlings, pesticides and support services for cocoa farmers.

However, the caucus alleges that the money was diverted or improperly utilized, contributing to declining cocoa output in recent years.

Speaking on the matter, members of the Majority argued that the alleged mismanagement of the funds undermined efforts to sustain Ghana's position as one of the world's leading cocoa producers and negatively affected the livelihoods of thousands of cocoa farmers.

The caucus further called for accountability and transparency in the management of resources within the cocoa sector, urging relevant state institutions to investigate the use of the funds and ensure that those responsible are held accountable if any wrongdoing is established.

The allegations come at a time when Ghana's cocoa industry continues to face challenges including illegal mining activities, climate change, smuggling and the spread of crop diseases, all of which have impacted production levels.

The NPP is yet to officially respond to the allegations made by the Majority regarding the use of the GH¢600 million earmarked for cocoa production support
