Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George has assured employees of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) that their jobs are secure despite the disruption caused by the June 29 floods, while urging management to reposition the state-owned technology hub into a financially sustainable enterprise.

The assurance comes weeks after the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations reversed a decision by GDCL management to suspend the contracts of all staff following flood damage to sections of the Accra Digital Centre.

The Ministry described the move as unacceptable and directed management to immediately reinstate affected employees, reaffirming government's commitment to safeguarding jobs during the Centre's recovery.

Addressing the Board, management and staff on Monday, July 13, Mr George sought to end uncertainty over the future of employees, declaring that no member of staff would lose their job because of the floods.

He said both permanent and temporary workers would remain employed as government works to restore operations at the facility.

The Minister, however, challenged management and staff to use the setback as an opportunity to transform GDCL into a commercially viable institution, stressing that the organisation could no longer operate under a "business as usual" approach.

He said the Ministry would support efforts to strengthen corporate governance, improve operational efficiency and restore the Centre's long-term financial sustainability.

According to Mr George, GDCL has the assets and potential to become a profitable state-owned enterprise, adding that management would be expected to deliver measurable improvements in performance.

He emphasised that the Centre's recovery should mark the beginning of a broader transformation aimed at boosting productivity, attracting investment and enhancing service delivery.

The Accra Digital Centre, which serves as a hub for technology companies, start-ups and innovation-driven businesses, suffered significant disruption during the June 29 floods. Recovery efforts are ongoing as government works to restore operations and rebuild confidence among tenants and investors.
