The Majority Caucus in Parliament is calling on Speaker Alban Bagbin to immediately declare the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant following a Tamale High Court ruling that annulled the constituency’s 2024 parliamentary election results.

The caucus insists that incumbent MP Matthew Nyindam must step aside without delay and cease participating in parliamentary proceedings until a fresh election is held.

According to the Majority, both the MP and the Clerk to Parliament have been duly served with the court’s order for a rerun after the 2024 results were overturned.

They argue that allowing MP Nyindam to continue contributing to parliamentary business would undermine judicial authority and contradict established precedents.

On the floor of Parliament, Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor cited earlier cases where MPs were compelled to step aside when their elections were nullified, most notably the case involving Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson.

“Mr Speaker, I’m not raising this whimsically. Precedent will guide us,” he said.

“When Honourable Gyakye Quayson was ordered to go through a rerun, members of this House insisted he could not continue to participate.

Eventually, he vacated his seat.

This path has been travelled before. Nobody can tell us today that Honourable Nyindam must still have a voice here. It won’t happen.”

However, the Minority Caucus is strongly opposing the call.
