Minority MPs suspend 'OccupyBoG' march
The Minority in Parliament has decided to postpone its planned protest against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison.
This decision comes in response to a court hearing where the police applied for an injunction on the protest due to security concerns.
The court has adjourned the ruling on a preliminary objection raised by the MPs' lawyers until Friday, September 8.
This, thus, means the 'OccupyBoG' march scheduled for 5 September 2023, cannot come off.
The MPs, under the leadership of NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, have objected to the police's capacity to initiate such action independently.
They argue that according to Article 88(5) of the 1992 Constitution and the State Proceedings Act, only the Attorney General has the authority to institute such actions.
In the meantime, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reassured their supporters that the protest will proceed once the court delivers its ruling.
The Minority in Parliament has accused the BoG Governor and his deputies if mismanging the central bank which resulted in a loss of GHS60.8 billion and a negative equity of GHS55.1 billon.
They also accuse the Governor of illegally writing off GHS48.40 billion of loans advanced to the government.
In defence, the Governor has attributed the loss to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
