Minority walks out as Awurabena Aubynn is sworn-in as MP for Ablekuma North

Parliament witnessed a dramatic walkout by the Minority Caucus today during the swearing-in ceremony of Madam Awurabena Aubynn as the newly elected Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Madam Aubynn’s swearing-in followed a re-run of voting in 19 polling stations within the constituency, originally part of the December 7, 2024, general election.
The re-run, held in July this year, was necessitated by electoral irregularities that affected the original outcome.
Her victory in the re-run confirmed her position and cleared the path for her official induction into the House.
The Minority's walkout signalled their continued dissatisfaction with the electoral process in Ablekuma North.
While they did not offer a formal statement during the walkout, sources within the Caucus suggest the action was meant to protest what they described as procedural inconsistencies and lack of transparency in the electoral re-run.
Meanwhile, the Majority in Parliament has extended an assurance to Ghanaians that it will not abuse its current supermajority status.
In a statement following the ceremony, the leadership of the Majority pledged to pursue “conditional reforms” aimed at rebuilding national institutions and restoring public confidence in governance.
According to the Majority, the entry of Awurabena Aubynn strengthens their resolve to implement development-focused legislation, while maintaining respect for democratic norms and multiparty dialogue.
Madam Aubynn, in a brief remark after taking the oath of office, expressed her gratitude to constituents and promised to serve with diligence, inclusiveness, and integrity.
