Police in the Western Region have apprehended Bernard Afful, the Mpohor Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for allegedly registering individuals under the age of 18 in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

Mr Afful, aged 59, was taken into custody alongside Rojer Miller, aged 33, the proprietor of Voice of Christ Preparatory School in Mpohor, who reportedly aided Mr Afful in this unlawful activity.

Reports indicate that the Mpohor Police received information suggesting that the school proprietor had registered his 16-year-old son, Gildolf Andoh, and other minors during the Voter Registration Exercise in Mpohor.

Following registration, the proprietor retained the minors' voter ID cards.

Acting on this intelligence, the police proceeded to the school premises, where they apprehended suspects Rojer Miller and Bernard Afful.

During a search of the proprietor's quarters, law enforcement discovered five voter ID cards under the names of Gildolf Andoh, Christabel Obeng Damoah, Christiana Assan, Spenlove Nana Boah, and Edward Ntiakoh, all students of Voice of Christ Preparatory School.

Upon interrogation, Mr Afful and Miller confessed to sending the five students to the registration center for registration.

Both suspects have been detained to facilitate further investigations, with efforts underway to summon the five students and obtain their birth certificates to verify their ages.

Subsequently, the two have been arraigned before court for prosecution.

The actions of the NDC Constituency Secretary highlight concerns regarding the party's commitment to electoral integrity and the credibility of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The NDC has been embroiled in disputes with the EC since the 2016 general elections, challenging election results and boycotting the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

It was also revealed that all five minors registered by the NDC Secretary utilized the guarantor system, prompting scrutiny of its efficacy.

The NDC leadership has vehemently opposed the EC's attempts to abolish the guarantor system in favour of using the GhanaCard as the primary identification document for voter registration.

Former Minority Leader and NDC MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, previously stated the party's intent to resist any efforts by the EC to eliminate the guarantor system.

When the EC proposed amendments to election laws to prioritize the Ghana Card for voter registration, the NDC minority obstructed the process, preventing the passage of the amendment into law
