NDC flips Ablekuma North seat in tight parliamentary re-run

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has successfully captured the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat following a tightly contested re-run, with candidate Ewurabena Aubynn emerging victorious.
Official results declared by the Returning Officer, Joseph Nii Kwartey Okpoti, show that Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh, who polled 33,881 votes — a slim margin of just 209 votes.
Out of the 68,328 total ballots cast, 67,917 were deemed valid, while 411 were rejected.
This outcome marks a significant turnaround for the NDC, as Ablekuma North was among the constituencies where parliamentary elections were disputed following the Electoral Commission's re-collation exercise.
Ms Aubynn’s win not only flips the seat for the opposition but also strengthens the NDC’s presence in the Greater Accra Region.
With this latest victory, the NDC now holds 184 seats in Parliament, securing a two-thirds majority.
However, the re-run was overshadowed by reports of violence, including alleged assaults on journalists and political party agents.
These incidents have sparked widespread condemnation and calls for immediate investigations and accountability.
