NPP grassroots group demands withdrawal of Ashanti constituency executive election annulment
A group calling itself the Grassroots Patriotic Alliance has petitioned the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to immediately withdraw the communiqué annulling constituency executive elections in selected constituencies in the Ashanti Region.
Addressed to the National Council, National Executive Committee (NEC), National Steering Committee and General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the petition argues that the decision breached the party's constitution and denied affected persons the right to be heard.
According to the group, the constituency elections were conducted under the supervision of duly appointed regional supervising officers, with the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service present to ensure transparency and order.
It contends that the General Secretary announced the annulment of the elections before inviting the Ashanti Regional Steering Committee to appear before the National Steering Committee to respond to the issues that allegedly informed the decision.
The petition argues that the National Steering Committee has no express constitutional authority to annul completed constituency executive elections, insisting that such powers are not provided for under the NPP Constitution.
It further maintains that the decision violated the party's own principles of natural justice by announcing the annulment before hearing from the affected parties.
The group also defended Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, saying he acted within his constitutional mandate by swearing in the elected constituency executives because there was no lawful directive instructing him to suspend the exercise.
The petition questions whether the National Headquarters issued any written directive preventing the swearing-in of the elected officers, whether the election results had been formally suspended before the communiqué was issued, and why the elections were allowed to proceed to completion if the party believed they were fundamentally flawed.
The Grassroots Patriotic Alliance is demanding the immediate retraction of the annulment communiqué, suspension of its implementation pending constitutional review, disclosure of the constitutional basis for the decision, publication of the complaints and evidence relied upon, preservation of all election materials, and a full hearing for all affected candidates and election officials before any further action is taken.
The group said the matter goes beyond the Ashanti Regional elections, arguing that it concerns the supremacy of the NPP Constitution and the integrity of the party's internal democratic processes.
