NPP rejects EC’s decision to rerun 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, describing the move as “unlawful, arbitrary, and politically motivated.”

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, July 3, 2025, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, accused the EC of succumbing to political pressure from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), and called on the Commission to instead comply with a High Court order to complete the collation of the remaining three polling station results in the constituency.

Mr. Frimpong described the EC’s latest directive as a “sudden U-turn” and “a disingenuous afterthought,” insisting that the Commission had already verified and collated results from 59 of the 62 outstanding polling stations, in line with a January 2025 court ruling.

He said only three polling stations remain to be collated, not 19, as the EC now claims.

“There is absolutely no debate that only three polling stations are left to be collated.

Even if a rerun were to be considered, it could only apply to those three, not 19,” Mr. Frimpong stated.

He criticised the EC’s justification that some scanned results used in the earlier collation had not been verified by presiding officers, calling it inconsistent and unsupported by the Commission’s own earlier records.

Mr. Frimpong also accused the NDC of orchestrating repeated attacks on the Ablekuma North collation centre to prevent completion of the process.

He cited several past disruptions allegedly led by the NDC’s regional executives and thugs, which, he claimed, derailed the collation process and led to the destruction of election materials.

He further questioned why one of the three outstanding polling stations—Glory Land Hotel Odorkor (1)—was not included in the EC’s list of 19 for the proposed rerun.

“That is how God has chosen to expose the duplicity of the EC,” he remarked.

The NPP argues that under Ghana’s laws, only a court can order a rerun of an election, and not the EC. Mr. Frimpong maintained that the law allows the Commission to use electronic records like scanned pink sheets in completing its collation and that those documents had been approved by both NPP and NDC agents during the earlier phases of the process.

The party alleged that the EC is bowing to threats from the NDC, including calls by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, for the removal of EC top officials.

Mr. Frimpong warned that if the EC proceeds with its current directive, it would set a dangerous precedent for future elections in Ghana.

“The 2028 election will be chaotic if this is allowed to stand.

We must never reward violence and lawlessness in our democratic process,” he warned.

The NPP said it has instructed its legal team to challenge the EC’s decision in court and demanded that the Commission complete the collation of the remaining three polling stations as ordered by the High Court.

“We will not allow the expressed will of the people of Ablekuma North to be overturned.

Our candidate,  Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh, won with 34,613 votes against the NDC’s 34,199.

No amount of arm-twisting will change that,” Mr. Frimpong insisted.

He concluded by urging civil society, religious leaders, and peace advocates to intervene and hold the EC accountable to its constitutional duty of neutrality and lawful conduct.
