Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to back calls for the removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson and her two deputies as “not too late,” urging both parties to work together to restore public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system.

Dr. Boamah made the remarks on Wednesday, July 9, in response to a statement by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua, who criticised the EC for lacking consistency and principles, particularly over its handling of a controversial re-run of elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency after the disputed December 7, Parliamentary election.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr. Boamah welcomed the NPP’s shift in position, stating, “Let’s work together to fix the broken Electoral Commission and save Ghana’s democracy!”

He added that the NDC had raised several red flags regarding the competence and impartiality of the current EC leadership in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, but said those warnings were largely ignored at the time.

“It’s not too late,” Dr. Boamah noted, expressing hope that a bipartisan consensus on electoral reforms could now be achieved to safeguard future elections.

The growing chorus of dissatisfaction with the EC’s performance comes amid mounting public and political scrutiny, with both major parties now voicing concerns over the integrity of Ghana’s electoral management body.

The latest development is expected to add pressure on the EC as civil society groups, political stakeholders, and governance observers continue to call for reforms to restore credibility and transparency in the country’s democratic process.
