PNP gov’t’ll dissolve GUTA to combat inflation – Janet Nable

The founder and chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Ms. Janet Nabla, has voiced her opposition to the formation of market associations, arguing that they unite to unilaterally increase prices to the detriment of Ghanaians.
“For us to give people liberty to go into market, form associations to be increasing prices is not good,” she stated on the Class Morning Show hosted by Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang.
Ms. Nabla threatened that a future PNP government would dissolve the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), blaming them for contributing to high inflation.
She asserted that GUTA executives and members would be investigated under a PNP administration, and those found guilty of leading the astronomical increase of goods on the market would be jailed.
“GUTA is one of the reasons Ghana is the way it is when it comes to inflation. They buy goods for one dollar and sell them for ten dollars to Ghanaians.”
Citing a personal example, she said, “I went to the market and asked about a particular chair. GUTA members said GHS 175. I went to Makola, and it was GHS 125. Do you know they have the same chair at China Mall for GHS 68? So you ask yourself, where did China Mall get theirs from?” she quizzed.
Ms. Nabla claimed that GUTA’s opposition to foreigners doing retail business in the country stems from their desire to manipulate market prices.
She also criticised the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for remaining silent on the matter, alleging that many of their members are part of GUTA.
