Minority demonstration over CJ's suspension

Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah has assured members of the Minority who participated in a demonstration calling for the reinstatement of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to upholding the rule of law and is not driven by vindictiveness.

In a Facebook post dated May 6, 2025, Dr. Omane Boamah sought to allay concerns raised by the demonstrators, reiterating that President Mahama will not act out of spite but will instead respect the findings and recommendations of the committee tasked with investigating the petition against the Chief Justice.

“Under President John Dramani Mahama, you can be assured the rule of law will be upheld.

President Mahama is not mean-spirited! He’ll uphold the recommendations of the committee established to look into the petition,” the Defence Minister wrote.

Dr. Boamah also referenced Presidential Aide Stan Xoese Dogbe, who received the Minority’s petition on behalf of the President.

He praised Dogbe for his composed response and noted that the demonstration was a reflection of the NPP Minority’s loyalty to one of their own.

The Defence Minister’s comments come amid heightened political tension over the suspension of Chief Justice Torkonoo, a move that has sparked debate across the political divide.

The Minority, made up predominantly of NPP MPs, has maintained that the suspension was politically motivated and is demanding her immediate reinstatement.

President Mahama has yet to make a public statement on the matter, but the Defence Minister’s remarks appear to signal the administration’s intention to allow due process to take its course
