Razak Kojo Opoku accuses Walewale MP of misleading public over Bawa-Rock Company
Political commentator and policy analyst, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has accused the Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, of deliberately misleading the public over the nature and operations of Bawa-Rock Company Limited.
In a statement issued over the weekend, Dr. Opoku described as “false” claims attributed to the Walewale MP that Bawa-Rock was established strictly as a farming or fishing company.
He argued that such assertions were based on a selective interpretation of the company’s Nature of Business/Sector and its International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) code, which lists the firm under mixed farming.
According to Dr. Opoku, a company’s true business scope should be assessed primarily through its principal activity and stated objects, rather than relying solely on its sector classification.
He explained that while the Nature of Business reflects a company’s primary economic focus, the principal activity and objects outline its broader and secondary operations, allowing for diversification across sectors.
He further noted that the ISIC system, developed under the auspices of the United Nations Statistical Commission, is intended mainly for statistical and administrative purposes and does not, on its own, limit a company’s operational mandate.
Dr. Opoku claimed that documents relating to Bawa-Rock Company Limited clearly indicate that “Dealers in Precious Minerals” is listed under both the company’s objects and its principal activity.
On that basis, he questioned the credibility of claims that the company was set up solely for farming or fishing.
The statement also highlighted that Bawa-Rock Company Limited was licensed as a gold buyer on three separate occasions under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration: from February 2019 to February 2020, October 2022 to October 2023, and August 2024 to August 2025.
Dr. Opoku argued that these licences, issued through state institutions including the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), undermine claims that the company lacked a legitimate mandate to operate in the precious minerals sector.
He further challenged assertions about the company’s date of registration, stating that even by the MP’s own admission, Bawa-Rock was registered in 2015, contrary to claims that it was incorporated in February 2025.
Dr. Opoku warned that what he described as “inconsistencies and misrepresentations” risk deepening public distrust in the NPP, which he said is already grappling with credibility challenges.
He called on party leaders and communicators to embrace honesty and intellectual integrity as part of efforts to rebuild public confidence.
