During the opening of the new parliamentary session, Speaker Alban Bagbin expressed disappointment over recent misconduct and disorderly behavior among Members of Parliament (MPs).

He emphasised such actions damaged the dignity of the House, undermining its effectiveness.

The Speaker reaffirmed that parliamentary privilege was designed to protect the independence of Parliament, not to serve as immunity against lawful investigations or criminal proceedings.

He clarified MPs were not above the law and that privileges did not exempt them from accountability.

He warned the House would no longer tolerate disorder, absenteeism, or procedural shortcuts, adding any misconduct would be met with appropriate sanctions.

The speaker, also, noted an increase in requests from law enforcement agencies regarding worrying conduct by MPs. He admonished members of the House to note investigations and legal processes were to be respected by them.

His message was clear: “The House is committed to upholding discipline, integrity, and accountability, and will ensure that Members adhere to rules and lawful conduct to restore public trust in the institution.”
