Special Prosecutor investigates NPP and NDC primaries over alleged vote buying
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has launched investigations into alleged electoral misconduct during the recent party primaries of Ghana’s two major political parties.
On 31 January 2026, the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted their presidential primaries. In its statement, the OSP said they had launched an investigation into the conduct of the primaries.
Subsequently, on 7 February 2026, the office commenced a real-time investigation into the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
The investigations are focusing on allegations of vote buying, vote selling, and the sources of funding for the alleged corrupt acts.
During the NDC parliamentary primaries at Ayawaso East on 7 February, one of the candidates, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, allegedly facilitated thugs to physically attack an OSP officer who was serving an investigative directive concerning vote buying and vote selling, the OSP said.
As a result, the OSP has opened a separate investigation into the assault of its authorised officer in the performance of official duties.
The OSP reminded the public that the law prohibits corrupt acts in relation to public elections.
“It is a serious offence to engage in vote buying, vote selling, intimidation, threats of violence, and acts of violence in relation to elections,” the office stated.
