Togbe Afede: ‘Why is everyone talking about peace and not free, fair elections?’

Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has urged Ghanaians to prioritise demands for free and fair elections rather than concentrating solely on peace messages ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at a public event on Monday, September 2, following a visit from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Togbe Afede stressed that the credibility of the electoral process is vital for ensuring long-term peace and stability in the country.
Togbe Afede underlined that while peace is important, it is the integrity and transparency of elections that truly prevent conflict and unrest. He called on citizens to be vigilant and hold electoral bodies accountable to guarantee fairness in the voting process.
"Why is everybody talking about peace during and after the elections, and nobody is talking about Free and fair elections, which will rather guarantee the peace we are all looking for?" Togbe Afede remarked, emphasising the need for a robust and transparent electoral system.
The chief's comments come amid rising political tensions as Ghana prepares for its next elections. His remarks highlight a growing concern that appeals for peace might overshadow the need for credible electoral practices that are fundamental to a peaceful society.
Togbe Afede's call reflects broader concerns about the state of Ghana's democratic processes, underscoring the view that fair elections are the cornerstone of a stable and prosperous nation.
