V/R: Court upholds Amewu’s election as Hohoe MP

Mr. Amewu made a late entry into the proceedings and introduced three new issues during the last hearing

The High Court in Ho has dismissed a petition challenging the election of John Peter Amewu as Member of Parliament for Hohoe.

The court cited lack of jurisdiction as the basis for its decision, maintaining Mr. Amewu's position despite significant voter disenfranchisement concerns.

The petition was brought forward by five residents from the Santrofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) enclave.

They argued that approximately 17,000 voters from 13 communities were unjustly excluded from participating in the 2020 parliamentary elections following the creation of the Oti Region from the Volta Region, resulting in their lack of representation in the 8th Parliament.

The petitioners contended that this disenfranchisement invalidated the election results. However, the court determined it did not have the jurisdiction to adjudicate the matter, leading to the dismissal of the case.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Mr. Amewu made a late entry into the proceedings and introduced three new issues during the last hearing.

The NDC in the region criticised this move, viewing it as a tactic to delay the resolution of the case.

Despite these developments, the court's decision upholds Mr. Amewu's election as MP for Hohoe, leaving the SALL enclave's concerns about electoral representation unresolved.
