The Member of Parliament (MP) for Effia, Isaac Yaw Boamah-Nyarko, has expressed strong confidence in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) appeal against the High Court ruling that ordered a re-run of the Kpandai parliamentary election.

Speaking to journalists, the Effia legislator described the ruling as “a surprising departure from established judicial standards,” arguing that the alleged voting irregularities cited in the petition were “far too insignificant to overturn the overwhelming will of the people”.

The December parliamentary election in Kpandai saw NPP’s Matthew Nyindam win by over 3,700 votes, while the petition challenging the results cited approximately 500 infractions.

Mr Boamah-Nyarko questioned the rationale behind annulling an election with such a wide margin, pointing to a 2013 Supreme Court position that irregularities must be substantial enough to affect the final outcome.

“You cannot set aside more than 4,700 votes because of claims that don’t fundamentally change the results,” he said.

“The people’s mandate is not theatre. Numbers matter.”

The MP confirmed that the NPP had filed both an appeal and a stay of execution, stressing that the Court of Appeal’s review would provide what he called “the needed correction” of the High Court’s decision.

He emphasised that the party remained committed to respecting electoral processes while defending the rights of its candidates to seek justice through the courts.

“Every Ghanaian has the right to contest an election and to have the law protect that right. We are confident the appellate court will uphold the people’s decision in Kpandai,” he added.

MP Boamah-Nyarko also rejected suggestions that the ruling signaled a weakening of the NPP’s parliamentary influence, insisting that the Minority Caucus remained “vigorous, focused, and committed to holding government accountable”.
