The Member of Parliament for Walewale Constituency, Dr. Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, has strongly condemned what he describes as a brutal assault on a journalist and several innocent civilians by military personnel in the Walewale township.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, the MP alleged that a journalist travelling in an armoured vehicle from Bolgatanga to Tamale was stopped by armed soldiers around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26.

According to him, the journalist was attacked without provocation.

Dr. Abdul-Kabiru said the reporter was beaten and detained for more than four hours.

He added that evidence of the assault recorded on the journalist’s phone was destroyed by the soldiers.

He further disclosed that both the District Police Command and the military unit stationed in Walewale appeared not to have been informed or involved in the operation carried out by the armed men.

The MP noted that this was not an isolated incident, recalling a similar attack in February 2025 in which the same journalist and two others were reportedly assaulted, leaving some victims unconscious.

Describing the incidents as “barbaric, unprofessional and infantile,” Dr. Abdul-Kabiru warned that repeated military aggression against civilians could undermine peace and security in the area.

“This unlawful deployment of the military is now turning Walewale and its environs into a jungle where civilians suffer injuries without reason or regard for professionalism,” he said.

“Instead of maintaining order, these actions are causing disorder.”

He also questioned the timing of the alleged assault, suggesting it occurred amid sensitive national issues, including the government’s handling of the Bawku conflict and the refusal to provide security for travellers to Bawku.

The Walewale lawmaker has called on the Acting Minister of Defence to launch an immediate investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He stressed that the abuse of force against civilians is unacceptable and must be addressed swiftly.
