‘You can’t nullify history’ – Gyampo to Akufo-Addo on ‘baseless’ Nkrumah ‘glory-sharing’

Political scientist Ransford Gyampo has said the rejection of historical facts by “one man” cannot rewrite the entire history of Ghana as far as the country's founding is concerned.
In a short comment on social media on Monday, 5 August 2024, a day after Founders’ Day – a statutory holiday which was deferred to the first working day of the week – Prof Gyampo said: “A mere rejection of historical fact by one man, and even by a whole regime cannot nullify the history.”
Prof Gyampo’s comment follows a statement made by President Nana Akufo-Addo at an event with senior citizens to mark the 2024 Founders’ Day in Accra: “I know there are some who question this ceremony that is 4th August, as Founders Day because they believe that we were asleep in Ghana until the arrival of Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP.”
Prof Gyampo recalled: “Six people were arrested for instigating the 1948 riot. Five of them denied involvement and pointed Nkrumah as the agitator.”
“Nkrumah boldly indicated his support for the riot and positive defiance of colonialism. We must go back to read our own history and stop the baseless insistence on glory sharing,” Prof Gyampo added.
