Refugee registration exercise expands to Western and Volta regions
A nationwide effort to strengthen identity registration among refugees in Ghana has entered a new phase, with the exercise now expanding to the Western and Volta regions.
The initiative is being implemented by Identity Management Systems (IMS), a subsidiary of Margins ID Group, in collaboration with the National Identification Authority, the Ghana Refugee Board, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The latest phase follows an initial rollout in the Greater Accra Region in 2023, which sought to provide refugees with access to national identification.
Under the programme, the cost of obtaining national identity cards is subsidised for refugees, helping to remove financial barriers that often prevent them from accessing identification documents.
Officials say the initiative is aimed at enabling refugees to access essential services, economic opportunities and social inclusion within their host communities.
According to organisers, securing a recognised form of identification is a critical step in helping displaced persons integrate into society and participate fully in social and economic life.
The partners involved in the programme say they remain committed to expanding the initiative across the country to ensure that more refugees in Ghana can obtain legal identification and benefit from the opportunities it provides.
