African Games: Azamati, Aggerh and Sarfo qualify for men’s 100m semis
Ghanaian sprinter Benjamin Azamati showcased a stellar performance by securing the first slot in the semi-finals after clinching victory in Heat 5 of the 100m race with an impressive time of 10.54 seconds.
Following closely behind was Nigeria’s Okon Sunday, finishing second in the heat with a time of 10.55 seconds.
Azamati's fellow countrymen, Aggerh and Sarfo, also secured their places in the semi-finals, with Aggerh finishing second and Sarfo fourth in their respective heats.
Barnabas further demonstrated Ghana's prowess on the track by booking his spot in the semi-finals from Heat 2 with a swift time of 10.46 seconds. Sarfo also showcased a commendable performance by clocking 10.34 seconds to secure fourth place in Heat 1.
The stage is set for the 100m semi-final competition, scheduled to take place later on Monday at the University of Ghana (UG) Stadium in Accra.
Meanwhile, Ghana's boxing contingent at the African Games is poised for success, with 10 out of 16 boxers in contention for medals in their respective weight categories. Abu Kamoko, Theophilus Allotey, and Mohammed Aryeetey have already secured bronze medals by reaching the semi-finals in the 48kg, 51kg, and 86kg categories, respectively.
Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi is among six boxers who have qualified for the quarter-finals in their weight divisions, along with Amadu Mohammed, Abdul Walid Omar, Joseph Commey, Henry Malm, and Daniel Plange.
Ghana's overall medal count has seen a significant boost in recent days, particularly with the weightlifting team's remarkable performance, clinching a staggering 41 medals over the weekend. With a total of 46 medals – including nine gold, 22 silver, and 15 bronze – Ghana now stands sixth overall on the medal table, showcasing the nation's growing prowess on the continental sporting stage.
