After restoring Black Stars' 'respect and credibility', head coach Carlos Queiroz leaves upon World Cup exit
Ghana Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has announced what appears to be his departure from the national team following the Black Stars' elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement, delivered via a statement on his verified Facebook page, comes after Ghana were knocked out of the tournament on Friday following a 1-0 defeat against Colombia in the Round of 32. Queiroz originally took charge of the team after former manager Otto Addo was let go, as the team prepared for the World Cup jointly hosted by Mexico, United States and Canada.
A Message of Pride and Ambition
Reflecting on the team's tournament run, Queiroz expressed a mixture of pride and a desire for higher standards in Ghanaian football.
"Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn," Queiroz wrote.
"I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination — it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions."
Off-Field Reforms Needed
The outgoing coach emphasised that sustained success for the national team requires structural development beyond the training pitch.
"The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch," the Portuguese tactician noted.
"Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana's extraordinary football talent."
Expressions of Gratitude
Queiroz extended his thanks to the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), his technical team, the playing body, and the public:
- To the GFA presidency and board: "Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the Country and the Black Stars."
- To the players and staff: "My deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team."
- To the supporters: "We cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football's greatest stage."
He concluded his farewell message by stating, "Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future."
Ghana's World Cup Campaign Review
The 1-0 knockout loss to Colombia brought an end to a mixed tournament run for the Black Stars in the United States. Competing in Group L during the group stage, Ghana's results included, in order:
- A dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, secured via a 95th-minute winner.
- A 0-0 draw against England.
- A 2-1 defeat against Croatia, which ensured their qualification to the knockout rounds.
