Ashgold target CAF inter-club competition

The Chief Executive Officer of Ashantigold SC, Frederick Acheampong, has said his outfit’s primary objective, this season, is to secure qualification for next season’s CAF inter-club competition.

Having exited the 2019/2020 CAF Confederations Cup in the first round at the hands of Moroccan side, RS Berkane, Acheampong insisted that it was imperative for the Miners to pick one of the two slots allotted to Ghanaian teams for the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup.

The Miners are leading the Ghana Premier League with 18 points after matchday 10, having won five, drawn three and lost two.

“We made a little name with what we did in Africa in 2019 and we are supposed to build on that. Once we are able to qualify for Africa, then, we build on the performances we put up in 2019. We believe that we can do it. The most important [thing] is qualifying for Africa if we win a trophy. If we don’t win and still qualify for Africa, fine”, he said.

According to him, “I was in Morocco and people received me very well because of Ashantigold, the way we played against RS Berkane. We [are] now a very popular club in Morocco. We want to create such a brand around the club and obviously it will take you participating in Africa to try and make yourself popular around Africa”.

Speaking on the probability of Ashantigold winning their first league title since 2014/2015 season, Fred Acheampong told CLASS SPORTS the target is to finish higher than 5th place.

“Ashantigold is one of the biggest clubs in Ghana. When we engage in the league, you [are] expected to finish in the first four. All the clubs play with the aim of winning. We are one of the clubs that can win it. Our minimum should be within the top four.

“We had a team. You will realise that we didn’t sign a lot of players. We had the core of the team there. So, we signed just a few players and we will be taking the games one after the other, and believe that by the time the league ends, we should be within the top four”.
