The driver of the Lexus SUV that was carrying former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and two other male passengers when it crashed into a stationary truck, killing two occupants, has been charged, police have confirmed.

The driver, identified as 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

According to police sources, prosecutors filed four charges against Kayode: causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

Kayode was granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million (approximately GHS36,418) and was remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions. The case has been adjourned to January 20.

Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength coach, Sina Ghami, died on Monday after the vehicle reportedly exceeded the speed limit, suffered a tyre burst, and collided with a stationary truck on a highway in Ogun State, near Lagos.

Anthony Joshua sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital, where he was treated and discharged on Wednesday. Ghami and Ayodele were pronounced dead at the accident scene.

In a statement, Ogun and Lagos state officials said Joshua was "heavy hearted," over the passing of his close friends. After being discharged from hospital, he visited the funeral home where their bodies were "being prepared for repatriation".
