Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has issued an official statement expressing deep solidarity with the victims of the devastating flooding in Accra. The disaster has left 12 people dead, seven missing, and thousands displaced from their homes.

The message, detailed in a Ghana Football Association (GFA) flyer was issued on behalf of Queiroz, his technical team, and the entire Ghanaian national squad currently based in the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Football is "Secondary"

In the official statement, Queiroz reached out directly to those affected by the crisis, stating: "To the families who have lost loved ones, those who have been displaced from their homes, and everyone affected – we are with you."

The head coach described the images and reports filtering through from the capital as "heartbreaking". He emphasised that despite the team’s current focus on tournament preparations, their minds remain firmly with the people back home.

"In moments like this, we are reminded that football is secondary," Queiroz said. "Ghana is one family. When Accra suffers, we all suffer."

Playing for Hope Against Colombia

The tragedy unfolds just as Ghana prepares for a major clash on the global stage. The Black Stars are scheduled to face Colombia in their upcoming World Cup fixture at the Kansas City Stadium on July 3.

Queiroz promised that the national team would carry the resilience of the Ghanaian capital into the match as they look to provide a source of hope during a difficult period.

The coach concluded the statement with a message of encouragement: "We will carry the people of Accra in our hearts when we walk out at Kansas City Stadium on July 3. Your resilience is our inspiration. We will give everything to make you proud and to bring some hope in this difficult time. Stay strong, Accra. Stay strong, Ghana. We stand with you."
