The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah, has cautioned the Black Stars and football stakeholders to guard against overconfidence following their opening match victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, June 18, the lawmaker urged the national team to maintain its focus and work ethic as they progress through the tournament group stage.

Call for Sustained Hard Work and Discipline

Delivering his remarks in the wake of the national team's tournament opener, the MP stressed that future success requires an active, collective effort from all parties connected to the team.

"I want to send this caution, I beg all the stakeholders, let them not be complacent. This includes the coach, the management body, the players and the entire state because the Bible says that faith without works is dead," Amoah stated.

"Let us not be sluggish, indolent and inactive and begin to be too complacent to the extent that we don’t get to where we want to get to. I believe that if it is the will of God, with prayer and hard work, we will go far."

Tournament Context

The MP's warning follows Ghana’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama on Wednesday, June 17.

The Group L encounter, played in Toronto, remained deadlocked until the 95th minute when midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi scored a late stoppage-time winner, assisted by substitute forward Brandon Thomas-Asante.

The hard-fought win secured Ghana three points to open their World Cup campaign under new head coach Carlos Queiroz.

The Black Stars are currently preparing for their next group stage fixture against group leaders England, scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, in Boston, United States of America.

The MP's admonishment ultimately highlights a timeless sporting truth: confidence is a powerful asset, but only when complemented by unwavering competence and hard work.
