Gov't exploring sponsoring fans to support Black Stars at 2026 World Cup-Kofi Adams
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams, has disclosed that the government is considering plans to sponsor Ghanaian supporters to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup to ensure strong fan representation at the tournament.
Mr. Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, made this known during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
He said there is a clear policy direction to ensure Ghana is represented not only by the Black Stars but also by their supporters, although the scale of the initiative will depend on available resources.
According to the Minister, a fundraising committee has already been established to mobilise funds to support the initiative. He explained that the number of fans who will eventually travel to the tournament will be determined by the amount of money raised.
“The policy that we should take for fans is clear. It is clear that we should work at it, and that is why we have set up a fundraising committee.
The number we would take ultimately will depend on how much we raise,” Mr. Adams stated.
He said the committee has been tasked with raising funds to cover travel and accommodation costs for supporters who will journey to cheer the Black Stars during the tournament.
Mr. Adams acknowledged that the initiative requires substantial financial support and indicated that the government is appealing to the private sector and the general public to contribute.
“This is why we are appealing to corporate bodies, companies, mining firms and well-meaning individuals to come on board and support this initiative,” he said.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
