Gyan labels Black Stars' display 'below average' after World Cup exit
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has criticised the Black Stars' performance following their 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, describing the display as "below average".
Speaking to SuperSport after the match, the pundit said Ghana lacked urgency throughout the contest and failed to impose themselves against a well-organised Colombian side.
"It was a below average performance," he said, adding that there was "no sense of urgency" from Carlos Queiroz's team.
Ghana made a bright start, with Thomas Partey narrowly missing the target with a long-range effort inside the opening minute but Gyan observed that Colombia controlled the game from the outset and continued to push for more goals despite taking an early lead.
According to him, the South Americans were the better side and merited their victory.
"Colombia dominated the game and wanted to score more goals," he said.
"Colombia deserved the win."
Ghana's World Cup campaign ended after Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the first half to send Colombia into the last 16.
The Black Stars struggled to create meaningful chances and failed to register a shot on target during the match.
The team's best attacking moment of the first half came when Antoine Semenyo saw a shot deflected over the bar, while Colombia continued to threaten through Luis Diaz and Suarez.
Goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi also produced an important save to keep out Johan Mojica's header before the interval.
Across their four matches at the tournament, Ghana managed only four shots in total, the lowest tally of any team.
The defeat ended Ghana's hopes of reaching the World Cup round of 16 for the first time since 2010, while Colombia advanced to face Switzerland in the next round.
