Harry Kane unsure of international future after world cup heartbreak
England captain Harry Kane admits it is "too early" to say if he will still be playing for the Three Lions by the 2030 World Cup, following a devastating semi-final exit against Argentina.
The defending champions pulled off a dramatic late comeback in Atlanta to defeat Thomas Tuchel’s side 2-1, booking their ticket to Sunday's final against Spain. For Kane, it marks a second painful World Cup semi-final exit in eight years, echoing England’s 2-1 loss to Croatia in 2018.
While the 32-year-old Bayern Munich striker praised Argentina's inspirational 39-year-old captain, Lionel Messi, he remains uncertain about his own longevity on the international stage.
"It's too early to talk about that. For me, it's about taking it year by year and seeing how I feel," Kane said. "The national team is my pride and joy, it's what I love to do most. Four years is a long way away, and I'll be 33 this summer. But as you see with Leo (Messi), he's still performing at the highest level at 39.
I never want to put a limit on these things. For now, it's just about processing another tough loss." He said
"There's not much to say. Everyone is gutted," Kane added. "When you're so close, just 10 minutes away, and it slips out of your hands like that, the lads are devastated. We did so well for 60 minutes. We scored and deserved to be ahead. But then we struggled to keep the ball, struggled to put pressure on them, and let them build momentum in our final third. We have to figure out how to improve in those situations.
It’s been the missing piece for the past four or five tournaments."
Despite the heartbreak, Kane’s tournament isn’t entirely over.
Having scored six goals so far, he could still contend for the Golden Boot in the third-place playoff, though both Messi and Kylian Mbappé currently lead the race with eight goals each.
England must now regroup quickly. They face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday at 21:00 GMT.
