Health scare behind exit: Karim Zito opens up on pressure-filled spell at Asante Kotoko
Former Karim Zito coach has revealed that the intense physical and emotional demands of managing Asante Kotoko took a serious toll on his health, forcing him to reassess his wellbeing and ultimately step away from the role.
Speaking candidly about his departure, Zito said he only discovered how much strain he had been under after visiting a doctor shortly after leaving the club.
“Seeing my doctor shortly after leaving Kotoko, he told me I was fortunate for the timely check-up; he noticed I was medically unfit, though I hadn't realised while working,” Zito recounted.
According to the experienced trainer, the pressure of leading one of Ghana’s most demanding football institutions left little room for family or personal life. He described a period of isolation, where the job consumed nearly every aspect of his day-to-day routine.
“I was living, eating, and talking alone; consumed by the Kotoko job. I handled the pressure all by myself. I only managed to see my family on five occasions,” he added.
His revelations shed light on the often unseen mental and physical burden coaches face behind the scenes, particularly at high-profile clubs where expectations for results are relentless.
Despite the toll, Zito’s stint was far from unsuccessful. He guided Kotoko to silverware, lifting the MTN FA Cup title last season after joining midway through the campaign, restoring belief among supporters and reinforcing his reputation as a seasoned tactician.
Now prioritising both his health and a fresh challenge, Zito has taken up a new role with Division One side FC AshantiGold04. The club is currently pushing for promotion back to the Ghana Premier League, and the veteran coach is expected to bring stability and experience to their campaign.
For Zito, the move represents more than just a new chapter in football — it’s a necessary reset after a period that tested both his resilience and his wellbeing.
