Kofi Adams: Sports Minister's confidence in Otto Addo will only be bolstered by sterling 2026 FIFA WC performance

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has indicated it will take more than qualifying for the FIFA World Cup to convince him about the Black Stars and Coach Otto Addo's strengths.

He spoke to UTV.

"I am happy we have qualified, but that does not mean everything was cool. I expect the coach [Otto Addo] to do a lot more," he said.

He explained that the opponents at the World Cup were entirely different from those of the qualifiers, and this could spell doom if not rightly appreciated.

He underlined the need for Otto Addo to refine his approach and tact.

"The qualifiers are entirely different, and sometimes you get a superior advantage over other countries and opponents," Kofi Adams said, "but at the World Cup, you can come up against the Asians, Europeans, the South Americans, North Americans, and what you have and [what] these countries have [are] different style[s] of play, so your reading of the game must be different."

Notwithstanding an abysmal performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Coach Otto Addo qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by finishing tops of Group I, with 25 points, after 10 matches. His team played against Comoros, Mali, Madagascar, Chad, and Central African Republic (CAR).

The 2026 FIFA World Cup takes the Black Stars to Canada, United States of America, and Mexico. The team will know their group stage opponents after the draw on December 5, 2025.
