Black Stars defender Marvin Senaya is set for an expected eight-week period of inactivity after undergoing successful surgery for a hamstring injury sustained during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The injury occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, during Ghana's Round of 32 clash against Colombia at the Kansas City Stadium. An initial MRI scan conducted by the Black Stars medical team in Kansas City revealed a significant hamstring injury, prompting immediate management of the acute condition.

The match had already seen physical casualties when Colombia was forced into an early change, replacing the injured Jhon Cordoba with Luis Suarez. Minutes later, Ghana suffered a parallel blow when Senaya was stricken by the hamstring injury, forcing Alidu Seidu to come on in his place.

Colombia capitalised on the immediate tactical disruption of the substitution. In the 14th minute, just moments after the changes, the Colombian substitute Suarez broke down the right flank and crossed to an unmarked Jhon Arias, who steered home what proved to be the only goal of the match.

The France-based defender, who featured in all four of Ghana’s World Cup matches before the setback, subsequently travelled to Paris for the surgical procedure. Following the successful operation, Senaya has returned to his club, AJ Auxerre, where he will remain inactive from competitive play for at least the next two months to undergo rehabilitation.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and AJ Auxerre are actively collaborating to oversee the defender's recovery program.

The leadership of the GFA, the Black Stars Management Committee, the technical team, and the playing body have sent their best wishes to Senaya for a speedy recovery.
