My next gov’t’ll invest in sports infrastructure – Mahama
Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has pledged significant infrastructure development in the sports sector if elected.
Speaking at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on Sunday, July 7, 2024, Mr Mahama highlighted the pivotal role sports will play in his 24-hour economy policy, emphasizing the need for substantial investment in sports facilities.
"In many countries, sports are integral to the 24-hour economy. Games are often played at night under floodlights. Unfortunately, here, many matches must end before sunset due to inadequate lighting. As part of our 24-hour economy initiative, we will invest in sports facilities to enable nighttime activities and services," Mahama stated.
He reiterated his commitment to providing stipends to local players in the premier league, a promise made in 2020. "I will pay stipends to footballers in the premier league as we promised in 2020."
Addressing a question about supporting lesser-known sports, Mr Mahama assured that these sports would receive equal attention and resources, ensuring balanced growth across all sporting disciplines.
