Olympic qualifiers: Black Queens suffer heartbreak, miss out on tournament

Ghana's Black Queens faced a disappointing result in Ndola, Zambia, on Wednesday, 28 February 2024, as they were unable to secure a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games.
Despite a draw, Barbra Banda's brace ensured a 3-3 result, sealing Zambia's qualification on aggregate against Ghana.
The Black Queens entered the match with confidence after a 1-0 loss at the Accra Sports Stadium last Friday.
Gifty Assifuah, who replaced Freda Ayisi in the starting lineup, scored the equaliser for Nora Hauptle's side after Banda's early goal in the 10th minute.
At halftime, both teams were level, with the home team leading 2-1 on aggregate. However, Doris Boaduwaa's goal in the 55th minute put Ghana ahead, only for Kabange Mupopo to equalise six minutes later.
Azumah Bugri's late goal seemed to force the game into extra time, but a foul by Jennifer Cudjoe saw her sent off for a second yellow card.
Banda capitalised on the resulting free kick, scoring her second goal and ensuring a 3-3 result on the day, with the Copper Queens claiming a 4-3 aggregate win.
The defeat ends Ghana’s chances of participating in the 2024 Olympic Games after overcoming challenges from Guinea and Benin.
The team will now shift focus to preparations for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco.
